| Lymington |
Lymington was
apparently known as Lentune in the Domesday book. In the middle
ages Lymington had a thriving shipbuilding business and was well
known for smuggling as there were plenty of subterranean
passages from the quay.
Today it is a well known location for yachting enthusiasts, as
it enjoys the advantages of double tides. The marina is full of
clothes shops and there are plenty of places to eat and drink.
The town centre buildings are Victorian and Georgian while the
cobbled streets, Saturday Market and 17th century houses make
Lymington a destination for tourists.
St Thomas's Church dates back to the 12th century, and sits at
the top of the High Street. A former curate, Henry Lyte, wrote
many famous hymns including "Abide with me". |
